Mike Malbrough is an author and illustrator originally from Reisterstown, Maryland. As a student, he was often mistaken for a genius; not because he scored all A’s but for being so small for his age. As a late bloomer, Mike didn’t date girls or hang out at parties but spent his youth sketching at home and pilfering art supplies off his older brother. Before long, others began to realize that Little Mikey could draw!
When Mike showed Mr. Maistros, his art teacher in high school, a drawing of a pint-sized superhero kid sporting a cape and mullet, Mr. Maistros asked if it was a self-portrait. “Every character I create is a self-portrait,” Mike replied. Mr. Maistros nodded and walked away. His work was complete. Soon after, Mike began his yarn-spinning career as a puppet-maker and performer with a small family-oriented theatre in his hometown.
Over a creative career spanning 20 years, Mike has designed and illustrated trees, robots, monsters, video games, hip-hop clothing, pet grooming logos, retiring coworkers and cute animals both stuffed and real. Mike’s winding road of doodling and artistry finally brought him back home to where his journey began, telling stories for kids and families.
Mike is the creator of MARIGOLD BAKES A CAKE (Philomel) and its 2019 sequel MARIGOLD FINDS THE MAGIC WORDS: A PLEASE AND THANK YOU STORY, as well as the illustrator on several upcoming books including the Warren & Dragon Chapter book series (Viking, August 2018.) and YOU MADE ME A DADDY (HarperCollins, Winter 2019).
Mike lives in northern New Jersey with his wife, two children and his cat Agnes, who used to hate him, but now won’t leave him alone. Even if he isn’t a genius.
